9 Pop Stars Who Are Definitely Celebrating World Vegetarian Day

The 1st of October is World Vegetarian Day! Started in 1977, this day seeks to bring awareness to the ethical, environmental and health benefits of ditching meat.

In the 90s, being a vegetarian was an uphill battle, vegetarians were constantly parodied as moralistic leaf-munching hippies with deplorable hygiene habits. But, as is always the case with avant-garde ideas, it finally began to grow in people’s minds. Nowadays, people are becoming increasingly conscious of the environmental damage caused by intensive farming and its unethical treatment of animals. The internet has shed light on this movement, helping people who want to turn vegetarian learn alternative forms of cooking and discover healthy substitutes to meat. The music industry has witnessed an increasing amount of artists switching to vegetarianism for health and ethical reasons. From the pioneers to the musicians we least expected to push away a steak plate, here’s a list of some of the artists who say no to meat.

Asap Rocky

“You gotta go do research on the way they treat like fucking chickens, man. Those chickens go through fucking torture before they’re processed and shit, have all sorts of fucking steroids injected in them and everything.”

Adele

“I’m trying to be veggie. For what I want to do next year, I have to be really healthy and stuff like that.”

Justin Timberlake

(Check out his impressive vegan rap talents):

“If you knew how meat was raised… you wouldn’t eat it”.

Jennifer Lopez

“I enjoy eating that way. And I didn’t know how good you can feel when you put healthy stuff in your body. I feel great mentally and physically!”.

Ariana Grande

“I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding. But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-around happier person. It is tricky dining out, but I just stick to what I know — veggies, fruit and salad — then when I get home I’ll have something else.”

Ellie Goulding

“I’m a bit more confident with my body,” she said. “I put it down to eating amazingly well. Now my body’s different, my face shape is different, and my eyes are brighter, too.”

Morrissey

“Eating meat is the most disgusting thing I can think of. It’s like biting into your grandmother” (and this quote is soft compared to some of Morrisey’s declarations).

André 3000 (is still a vegetarian despite having given up veganism)

“I was a vegan for 15 years. Socially it became horrible. I was kind of just sitting at home eating a salad. You become mean. That’s not good for you.”

Miley Cyrus

“There is nothing more beautiful than eating a meat free gluten free dairy free cheeseburger in the sunset.”
